SPE-120 and SBb 2.5

JABB of the Carolinas is a biological company that was established almost 30 years ago. They are still committed to bringing sustainable, biological solutions to the agricultural market. Their most successful formulations are SPE-120 (organic) and SBb 2.5 (conventional) biological seed dressings, which are formulated with the active ingredient Beauveria bassiana; a symbiotic fungus that occurs in nature. As an endophyte, Beauveria bassiana can live within each cell of the plant, thereby growing symbiotically with the roots, stems, and leaves of your plants. Therefore, it is most effective as a seed-applied product; to ensure the highest percentage of plant cells containing this endophyte.

What SPE-120 and SBb 2.5 can offer your crop, beyond stimulating the immune system and restricting harmful plant pathogens, is increased resistance to chewing and biting insects. Invertebrates (bugs) do not have a digestive system that is complicated enough to break down and destroy the Beauveria bassiana fungus, unlike vertebrates (mammals/humans). The entomopathogenic fungus then begins to infect, take over, and destroy the insect from the inside out.

On our farm, we have found that these products can bring season-long resistance to these pests, while the synthetic chemicals cannot. What cost can you attribute to pest management on your farm? Click the link below to watch a video of an in-field trial we did on our non-GMO canola.

Unlike conventional seed dressings using synthetic chemicals, SPE-120 or SBb 2.5 blends food-grade and/or certified organic products with the active ingredient Beauveria bassiana. Synthetic seed dressings become less effective as plants grow and are not the best for your soil microbial life, and ultimately the environment.

When you choose SPE-120 or SBb 2.5, you’re selecting a biological seed dressing that many certifiers have determined to comply with organic standards. Contact us today to see if SPE-120 or SBb 2.5 is the right fit for your crops and choose a sustainable seed dressing to boost your crop performance.

Plant Symbiont

Using SPE-120 has many benefits for your crops, including:

Stimulating Plant’s Immune System
Restricting Harmful Plant Pathogens From Entering The Plant
Interacting With Your Crops To Produce Additive Biochemicals
Increases Plant Resistance To Insect Feeders
Beauveria bassiana is a fungus naturally occurring in soil but is often killed off by fungicides and tillage. When you use SPE-120, you are directly applying beauveria bassiana as an active ingredient to your plant and reaping the direct benefits. Don’t wait. Contact our qualified team at Fabian Seed Farms to see if SPE-120 is the right biological seed dressing for your crops.

Observed results

Observed Results Using SPE-120

Potatoes
In a report with data collected in Colorado and Ohio, farmers saw a yield increase of over 20 bags per acre. In Colorado, SPE-120 helped reduce Rhizoctonia, and the pick outs were reduced from their normal average of 23% to 2%. There was minimal damage from the Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB) in Ohio due to increased plant resistance to insect feeders. Lastly, High Plains growers reported increased quality and increased yields due to limited potato psyllid pressure.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes treated with SPE-120 and then sold to restaurants were noticeably more flavourful than tomatoes that were not treated. The Brix score measured five points higher than the control tomatoes, and the outdoor crops had limited insect damage.
Strawberries
Strawberries treated with SPE-120 saw faster greening in the first six weeks.
Soybeans
Soybeans treated with SPE-120 had increased resilience to flooding and drought and yield more bushels than untreated beans. When measuring leaf chlorophyll, treated plants measured 4.2 points higher than untreated. Soybeans that were treated also saw reduced stem canker, stem borer, fusarium root rot, common rust and Anthracnose.
Corn
Treated corn had increased resilience to flooding and drought. When used in organic corn trials, there was an increase of up to 20 bu per acre in Ohio and northwest Iowa. SPE-120 also helped improve root and stalk development while also reducing mycotoxins, fusarium, gossip wilt, and Anthracnose.
Cole Crops
Cole crops treated with SPE-120 see improved plant health along with reduced loopers.
